The Nature Conservancy and USGS, along with other partners, are focused on improving floodplain function in Puget Sound. A 2013 report on targeted areas integrates biophysical indicators and human indicators. Small-scale projects in Fisher Slough and Port Susan Bay have demonstrated the value of restoring floodplains, which provide important habitat as well as protecting nearby areas if water should rise.
