Ecology and Life History
Short General Description
Small, light-green, gregarious plants. Leaves erect-spreading, narrowly elliptic to obovate or spatulate, acute or acuminate, serrulate above the middle; costa subpercurrent or ending slightly below the apex. Autoicous or polygamous. Setae very short and rather stout; capsules immersed, subglobose with a very short neck, dehiscing regularly along a persistent annulus (Crum and Anderson 1981).

Global Range
Scattered from New Brunswick to Minnesota, south to New Jersey, Maryland, Kentucky, and Louisiana. In the west, known from British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, Colorado, and Texas (Crum and Anderson 1981). Known from 2 stations in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick (Ireland 1982) and 3 stations in Ontario (Ireland & Ley 1992). Ireland (1982) notes the species also from Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Quebec. Reported from South America (Ireland 1982). The moss is extirpated in British Columbia and historical in New York.
