Boreal Wormwood is a perennial herb with 1-4 dm stems arising from a branched rootcrown or rhizome. The alternate leaves have long petioles and elliptic blades, 2-10 cm long, that are pinnately divided into lance-shaped, deeply lobed leaflets. Foliage is glabrous to moderately covered with long hair. Nearly sessile, nodding flower heads are borne in a narrow, sparingly branched inflorescence. Each flower head is up to 1 cm across and has numerous white disk flowers, as well as several series of overlapping, glabrous to woolly, dark-margined, 4-7 mm involucral bracts. The achene is glabrous and lacks a pappus.
