    Short General Description
    Mosses dark green, becoming yellowish brown with age, solitary to loosely tufted; stems simple or rarely branched; central strand large; rhizoids usually few. Leaves much crisped and contorted when dry, widely spreading when moist, oblong to oblong-lanceolate, ligulate, scarcely sheathing or dilated at the base, acute or obtuse, undulate with coarse teeth on the backs of the undulations; margins flat. Polyoicous. Seta single, erect, reddish and smooth, becoming hollow; capsules cylindric, terete, inclined, or curved, gradually narrowed at the base, neck region short, stomata lacking; peristome teeth 32. Lid convex, long and slenderly rostrate, often nearly equalling the length of the urn (Flowers 1973).

    Global Range
    Endemic to North America, known from Oregon, Montana, Utah, and Colorado in the United States. In Canada, known from British Columbia to Alberta (Flowers 1973). Extending into Saskatchewan. Also known from California, Washington, Idaho, Wyoming, Manitoba, and Alaska (Lawton 1971). In British Columbia, probably throughout the coastal area, also in the moister forests in southeastern British Columbia (Schofield 1969). Ireland (1969) notes the species as common from Alaska south to California.
