Of the several varieties sometimes recognized in Carex flava, five (vars. fertilis, gaspensis, graminis, laxior, and rectirostra) are included in the synonymy of C. flava. However, vars. lepidocarpa and nelmesiana are included in Carex virida, and part of var. fertilis is included in C. cryptolepis. LEM 6Jun00.
