Plantae - Anthophyta - Monocotyledoneae - Cyperales - Cyperaceae - Carex - Carex saxatilis var. major (Kartesz 1994 checklist) is now considered a synonym of this widespread natural hybrid (Kartesz 1999). Carex saxatilis ssp. laxa is treated as a synonym of C. saxatilis by Kartesz (1999), but equated with C. saxatilis var. major by Weber and Wittmann (1992) in their Colorado checklist, and in Tolmachev (1996) for the Russian Arctic.
