It occurs throughout most of Alaska and Canada, south to New England, West Virginia-Maryland, northern Ohio, northern Indiana, Minnesota, Nebraska, eastern Colorado, Idaho, and Washington; also in northeastern Asia. It has been introduced in the upper Colorado River drainage, Wyoming and Colorado.
