Short General Description
Prickly hornwort, coontail; Hornwort family (Ceratophyllaceae). A perennial, rootless, freshwater, submersed aquatic plant with long stems and whorled, dichotomously-dissected leaves; can anchor with whitish, modified leaves.

Global Range
Ceratophyllum echinatum occurs from Nova Scotia and New Brunswick south to Florida, and west to Manitoba, Minnesota, Illinois, Kansas, and Texas. Range also includes British Columbia, Washington, and Oregon. Reports from Mexico and Central America are erroneous, they refer to a different species.
