    Short General Description
    Mosses dull, brownish, very short and budlike, from a persistent protonema. Leaves ovate to oblong-lanceolate, gradually tapered to a narrow, blunt apex, entire or crenulate above; costa weak or even lacking near the base, narrow and indistinct above, ending at or near the apex. Setae 7-10 mm long, twisted when dry; capsules ovoid, horizontal to cernuous, finely wrinkled (Crum and Anderson 1981).

    Global Range
    In North America, known from Illinois, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Washington, British Columbia (extirpated), Alberta, Quebec, and Northwest Territories. Known elsewhere from Finland, Scandinavia, Germany, Russia, England, and Japan (Crum and Anderson 1981). Very rare in Asia, known in Siberia from Tobolsk and the Yenisey region, and in the Far East from Sakhalin (Hill et al (1994).
