Ecology and Life History
Short General Description
Plants in deep tufts, dark green to yellow-green at the tips, brown below. Stem 1-5 cm high, sometimes branched. Leaves stiff and erect, lanceolate, or lanceolate from an ovate base; margins plane or incurved above, entire or with a few small teeth at the apex; midrib percurrent; lamina bistratose in the upper part of the leaf; cells of the lamina and costa papillose from the apex to the middle of the leaf or below, the papillae often at both ends of the cells (the papillose cells distinguish the variety from Ditrichum zonatum var. zonatum, which has smooth leaf cells) (Lawton 1971).

Global Range
Known from British Columbia and Washington in North America and is also known from Europe (Lawton 1971). Smith (1978) considers this variety to be endemic to Britain and Ireland, but the British Columbia Conservation Data Centre has confirmed that there are at least ten collections for B.C. (Sharon Hartwell pers. comm. Dec. 2000).
