Plantae - Anthophyta - Monocotyledoneae - Cyperales - Cyperaceae - Eleocharis - Eleocharis engelmannii is part of one of the most taxonomically challenging complexes in the genus (Yatskievych 1999). E. engelmanii is recognized as distinct by Kartesz (1999) and others (Voss 1972, Great Plains Flora Association 1986). However, some authors have treated the complex as one species (with no infraspecific taxa) (Gleason and Cronquist 1991, Moss 1994, Yatskievych 1999).

Global Range
Occurs across central Canada from Alberta to Ontario. and is widespread in the United States from Washington to Maine (historical) south to California and Georgia.
