Formal Taxonomy
Plantae - Lycophyta - Lycopodiopsida - Lycopodiales - Lycopodiaceae - Huperzia - Named from Hawaii, where now perhaps extirpated. At least some (but apparently not all) plants formerly treated as Lycopodium/Huperzia selago ssp. arctica and ssp. patens (both of northwestern North America and eastern Asia) are now considered the same species as the Hawaiian collection, under the species name Huperzia haleakalae. (see Flora North America, pteridophytes, 1993). The '3A' designation is from the 1990 Federal Register, where the species is treated as a Hawaiian endemic; the species is not addressed at all in the 1993 Federal Register. LEM 13Mar94, rev 14Jan98.
