Reproduction Comments
First-time spawners generally are 4-5 years old. Individuals are capable of spawning more than once before they die, though spawning more than twice is rare. Steelhead eggs incubate 1.5-4 months before hatching (varies with temperature). Juveniles spend 1-4 (generally 2) years in fresh water before migrating to the ocean as smolts. Some of the oldest smolt ages for steelhead, up to seven years, are reported from this ESU; this may be associated with the cold stream temperatures; smolts are dominated by two-year-olds (see NMFS 1996).
