Formal Taxonomy
Plantae - Anthophyta - Dicotyledoneae - Scrophulariales - Orobanchaceae - Orobanche - Hitchcock and Cronquist (1974) noted that Heckard had been recently annotating specimens from Washington and southern British Columbia with this name for a new taxon; Heckard described Orobanche corymbosa ssp. mutabilis in 1978 (with a Washington type locality). Heckard and Chuang (1975) noted that further cytogeographic survey was needed to determine whether the taller, spicate plants of the Columbia Plateau in Washington (with 2n = 48 from Kittitas and Grant counties) were uniformly different in chromosome number from the shorter, corymbose plants of the Great Basin region (with 2n = 96 from Nevada and California). The type locality for Orobanche corymbosa ssp. corymbosa is in southwestern Idaho (Owyhee County) (Ferris 1960; Cronquist et al. 1984), on the southern portion of the Columbia Plateau (e.g. Hunt 1967).
