Ecology and Life History
Short General Description
Thallus thin to moderately thick, closely adnate, rough and wrinkled, ashy to white, the lobes short and narrow, with crenate margins, frequently passing into a continuous, coarsely wrinkled, warty crust; brownish below with short, blackening rhizoids; apothecia small, sessile, the disk concave to flat, black, usually grayish pruinose, the exciple moderately thick, colored like the thallus, irregular and wavy (Fink 1935).

Global Range
From British Columbia south through California east to Arizona and New Mexico and north to Colorado (Hale 1979). Also occurrs in Mexico (McCune and Geiser 1997). Found near San Francisco, California (Fink 1935). In California, from San Diego County northward to Sonoma County in the North and South Coast Ranges and on the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada from Mariposa County to Butte County (Hale 1988).
