Greenland and the Canadian Arctic to Alaska, south in suitable rocky or montane situations to Virginia, Indiana, Iowa, Colorado, and Oregon; northern and central Europe, the Caucasus, northern and central Asia; Japan; reported from China and Hawaii (Crum et al. 1981).
