Ecology and Life History
Short General Description
Plants in loose patches or mats, dark green to brownish below. Primary stems creeping, secondary stems ascending, the branches numerous, turned to one side, strongly julaceous, often flagelliform. Leaves closely imbricate when dry, erect-spreading when moist, cordate-ovate, acute to acuminate, concave, slightly decurrent; margins sharply serrate at apex, incurved at base, plane above; costa wanting or short and double. Dioicous, the perigonia and perichaetia on secondary stems and branches. Seta smooth. Capsule brown, erect and radially symmetric to slightly zygomorphic, smooth to somewhat wrinkled when dry (Lawton 1971).

Global Range
Known from British Columbia, south through Washington and Oregon to California (Lawton 1971). In Europe, from south and western Europe, extending north to Norway; common in the Mediterranean countries at moderate altitudes; Macaronesia, Africa from the Mediterranean to the Cape, southwest Asia (Hill et al 1994). Scattered in the southern parts of Fennoscandia (Nyholm 1954-69). Also in Madeira, Canaries, and Reunion (Smith 1978).
