Lemmon's Alkaligrass is a tufted perennial with stems 20-40 cm tall. The stiff, thread-like leaf blades are less than 1 mm wide and rolled inward. Stem leaves are few and small, and ligules are 1-2 mm long. The spikelets are borne in an open, spreading inflorescence with scabrous branches. Spikelets are 5-flowered and ca. 3.5 mm long, with slender lemmas that are 3.5-4 mm long, and 2 pointed lemmas that are ca. 1 and 2 mm long.
