Ecology and Life History
Short General Description
A dwarf perennial herb with flowering stems, generally 2-7 cm tall, arising from a short rhizome or rootstock. Bulbils may form on the stem. Greenish flowers, often with purple margins, are clustered into a flat-topped flower head and bloom from June to August. The chlorophyll-containing petals are long-lasting without withering, allowing extended photosynthesis while the fruits develop - an adaptation to the short growing season in a high elevation habitat. Plants are semi-evergreen with leaves persisting through two growing seasons, and grow solitary or in small groups.
