Ecology and Life History
Short General Description
Mosses 1-2.5 mm high. Leaves erect-flexuose when dry, erect-spreading and sometimes recurved at the tips when moist, narrow and setaceous, gradually or rather abruptly subulate from a lanceolate or ovate-lanceolate base, acute; margins entire or, rarely, serrulate at the shoulders, erect; costa filling most of the subula and excurrent. Perichaetial leaves clasping at the base, otherwise similar to the upper stem leaves. Setae 2-4 mm long, curved to cygneous when moist, yellow or brown (Crum and Anderson 1981).

Global Range
Known from British Columbia and Washington, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Quebec, New Brunswick, New Jersey, Newfoundland, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Tennessee, and Missouri. Known from northern and central Europe and Japan (Crum and Anderson 1981). Also from Alberta and Ontario. Widespread in Europe, especially central Europe; becoming rare in northern Scandinavia and in the Mediterranean countries; scattered through Asia (Hill et al 1992). At isolated localities in Fennoscandia (Nyholm 1954-69).
