Lamb recognized two varieties, a typical and var. caespitosulum; however varieties not accepted by Egan, 1987; or Hale, 1979.
Ecology and Life History
Short General Description
Lichen; podetia short to moderately long, erect or ascending, slender, loosely of sometimes densely clustered, becoming much branched, the branches smooth, squamulose above, the squamules grayish white to brownish, passing into minute, irregular, confluent granules; apothecia small, lateral or sometimes terminal, rarely clustered, the disk flat to slightly convex, brownish black to black (Fink 1935).

Global Range
Known from New England, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, Washington, and California (Fink 1935). Also reported from Ontario and Virginia.
