It is recognized as varietally distinct by some taxonomists (e.g. Hulten, 1968; Hitchcock, et al, 1955; Douglas, et al, 1989; Kartesz, 1994 and 1999). Others recognize a single wide-ranging variable species (Welsh, 1974; Calder and Taylor, 1968; Fernald, 1950).
