Reproduction Comments
Artemia can reproduces exually (xygogenetically) with separate sexes and obligated mating between female and male, or parthenogenetically where females do not mate with their males and offspring are almost exclusively female. Campos-Ramos et al. (2003) found commercial Great Salt Lake (Utah) cyst lots contain two different brine srhimp species; a parthenogenetic (60%) and a zyogenetic (A. franciscana) (40%); which implies either the parthenogenetic Artemia is native to Great Salt Lake or it was introduced to Great Salt Lake; OR foregin parthenogenetic cysts were mixed wtih A. franciscana cysts and then later canned for commercial use.
