Classification
Informal Taxonomy
Animals, Invertebrates - Insects - Ants, Wasps, and Bees
Formal Taxonomy
Animalia - Mandibulata - Insecta - Hymenoptera - Apidae - Bombus - have been regarded as both as conspecific (e.g. LaBerge and Webb 1962, Milliron 1971, Thorp et al. 1983, Laverty and Harder 1988) and as separate species (e.g. Franklin 1913, Rasmont 1988, Scholl, Thorp, Owen and Obrecht 1992, Poole 1996, Williams 2008). They are treated here as separate following Williams (2008) and Cameron et al. (2007), although more study is needed. Scholl et al. (1992) point out that supposed intergrades are based solely on coat color and they propose an alternate explanation of convergence (or Mullerian Mimicry) in overlap areas. They report that electrophoretic enzyme studies from the supposed intergrade areas indicate distinct species status. Similarly Golik and Ellis (2006) report no intergrades in Nebraska even based on coat color.

GH - 200,000 to >2,500,000 square km (about 80,000 to >1,000,000 square miles) - GH - B. nevadensis apparently occurs from Alaska to Mexico in the West. Scholl et al. (1992) conclude that the range is primarily from California east to about the 98th to 100th meridian, with B. auricomus replacing it farther east. The Discover Life site indicates B. auricomus occurs mostly east of the Mississippi River. However, www.bumblebee.org indicates much broader overlap with B. nevadensis extending east to Wisconsin in the north and New Mexico in the south with a rather large overlap with B. auricomus. Golick and Ellis (2006) document both species in Nebraska without apparent intergrades. B. auricomus occurs or occurred nearly statewide and B. nevadensis is reported only from nine western counties and verified for five. Four counties apparently have or had both species. Some historic records for both species are unconfirmed. There are current records for only two counties. Neither species is reported recently in the southwestern counties, but B. nevadensis is reported historically. Scholl et al. (1992) investigated the overlap zone and found evidence of phenotypic convergence in coat color rather than actual intergradation, which may complicate identification of specimens in some places. Websites and other sources indicating a more transcontinental (coast to coast) range are probably basing this on both species.
