Global Range
H - >2,500,000 square km (greater than 1,000,000 square miles) - H - This is a widespread western, but not entirely montane, bumblebee. This range is mostly from the Discover Life Website as of March 2010 and includes B. bifarius nearcticus. As so-defined the species ranges from southern Alaska through British Columbia and parts of Alberta with much sparser records east to Yellowknife NWT and Manitoba, becoming more widespread in southwestern Canada east-southeast to the Dakotas, then south into California, Colorado and Arizona (Oak Creek Canyon, but not reported by Schmidt and Jacobson, 2005). Records become more scattered eastward in the prairie regions but extend as far as Wisconsin, extreme western Nebraska (Golig and Ellis, 2006), and Kansas. The Discover Life Website also shows one record much farther east, a specimen labeled as collected in July 1946 in Hamilton County, New York, but it was not found in Illinois (Grixti et al., 2009) or southern Ontario (Colla and Packer, 2008). Occurrence in or near New York needs confirmation, especially given lack of records from well-studied Vermont.
