Callophrys gryneus

Callophrys gryneus is resident in several non-contiguous populations across the United States and into southwestern Canada (Scott 1986). Habitats are lower Austral/upper Sonoran to Hudsonian zone dry or rocky open areas wherever juniper-like trees occur. Host plants are several genera of tree Cupressacea and Pinacea. Eggs are laid on the host plant singly on foliage tips and blooming twigs. Larvae eat foliage tips. Individuals overwinter as pupae. There are variable number of flights based on latitude with two flights of approximate times late Apr- early Jun and late June - early Aug in the northeast and mid-west; several flights late Mar-early June and July15-Sept30 in southeast US; one flight May15-June30 in most of the west; one flight Apr1-May30 on most of Pacific coast (Scott 1986). Scott (1986) recognizes many subspecies.

Global Range: (>2,500,000 square km (greater than 1,000,000 square miles)) Between the various taxa now included in this species they occupy much of the USA with at least one subspecies reported from probably all of the lower 48 states. Also enters parts of northern Mexcio and extreme southern Canada.

Comments: Juniper woodland, abandoned pastures, old fields, barrens, glades, coastal thickets and scrub; with its larval hosts, Juniperus virginiana, J. scopulorum.

Non-Migrant: No. All populations of this species make significant seasonal migrations.

Locally Migrant: No. No populations of this species make local extended movements (generally less than 200 km) at particular times of the year (e.g., to breeding or wintering grounds, to hibernation sites).
