Note: For many non-migratory species, occurrences are roughly equivalent to populations.
Estimated Number of Occurrences: > 300
Comments: It occurs in ponds, creeks and the Savannah River on property of the Savannah River Power Plant, Aiken, South Carolina (Wood, 1982). In Georgia, this species is found from the mountains to the coastal plain but is most dense in the Piedmont Region (Dillon et al., 2006). It is fairly ubiquitous across all of North Carolina (Dawley, 1965; Dillon et al., 2006) and occurs in the Blue Ridge, Piedmont and into the Southeastern Plains in South Carolina (Dillon and Stewart, 2003). In Alabama, it is common and presumably found throughout the state (Mirarchi, 2004). Thompson (1999) claims it has been found only once in Florida in Holmes Co. In the Cuyahoga Valley National Park (between Cleveland and Akron, Ohio), this species was recently found in ponds in the southern end of the park (Smith et al., 2002). In Indiana, Pyron et al. (2008) found it in 6 of 123 sites surveyed including the Wabash, Tippecanoe, and St. Joseph drainages while Jokinen (2005) documented it only historically in Indiana Sand Dunes National Seashore compared to Goodrich and van der Schalie (1944) who reported it was probably in every part of the state. It has been found in Frog Bayou (Lower Arkansas drainage), Arkansas (Gordon, 1985). Minton et al. (2008) documented it in the Bayou Bartholomew drainage in Arkansas. Dillon and Benfield (1982) documented this species in the New River in southwestern Virginia and Northwestern North Carolina. In Missouri, it is found only in the eastern half of the Ozark Region in Butler, Crawford, Franklin, Howell, Jefferson, Reynolds, Ripley, St. Francois, Washington, and Wayne Cos. (Wu et al., 1997). Freeman and Perkins (1997) found it in the Niobrara River, Nebraska on the western portions and Cherry Co. In Kentucky, it has been documented in the Green River (Sinking Creek) (Branson and Batch, 1983), Kentucky (Middle Fork Kentucky River, Elkhorn Creek, Red River, Lake Arlington, Bear Branch, Greasy Creek), and Tygarts Creek (Tygarts Creek) (Branson and Batch, 1981) drainages. Branson and Batch (1987) documented it in Kentucky in Townsend Creek, Bourbon Co.; and a record from Laurel Lake in Virginia. In Pennsylvania, it occurs in the Delaware, Ohio, Potomac, and Susquehanna basins (Evans and Ray, 2010). It occurs in the Blackwater River, Tucker Co., West Virginia (Cheat River watershed) (Schwartz and Meredith, 1962). In Alberta, it is found throughout the province (Lepitzki, 2001). It has been collected recently (2002) in Esker and Colin Lakes (Colin-Cornwall Lakes Wildlands Park) in Alberta (Nordstrom, 2003).
