Reproduction Comments
This species is hermaphroditic. Miller et al. (2006) showed that outcrossing is likely common in natural populations, but could not eliminate the possibility that this species is capable of producing offspring via self-fertilization.

FH - 20,000 to >2,500,000 square km (about 8000 to >1,000,000 square miles) - FGH - Widely distributed in Western North America (and possibly Mexico unless you believe Hovingh, below). Hovingh (2004) noted no specimens in surveys across all western states and museum collections except the holotype matched the original description and indicated this species may be a Mexican endemic with U.S. populations being Valvata californica. Hovingh (2004) proposes Valvata californica Pilsbry, 1908 (type locality Big Bear Lake, CA) as senior synonym to U.S. and Canadian Valvata humeralis.
