Hovingh (2004) noted no specimens in surveys across all western states and museum collections except the holotype matched the original description and indicated this species may be a Mexican endemic with U.S. populations being Valvata californica. Hovingh (2004) proposes Valvata californica Pilsbry, 1908 (type locality Big Bear Lake, CA) as senior synonym to U.S. and Canadian Valvata humeralis.
